The Engineering Research Centers (ERCs) funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) play a pivotal role in driving innovation and collaboration in engineering research. These centers, often housed in universities, tackle complex societal challenges and aim to generate transformative solutions that have a broader impact on the society.
NSF site visits are crucial components of the ERC program. These visits, conducted annually, allow the NSF to assess the progress of each center, evaluate the outputs and emerging outcomes against the proposed plans, and provide constructive feedback to ensure the center’s continued success. They also serve as opportunities for collaboration, knowledge sharing, and networking among researchers, students, industry and scientific advisory partners, and the NSF officials.
I had the privilege of attending and participating in an NSF site visit at Texas Tech (TTU) this week for the Gen 4 Engineering Research Center (ERC) on Sustainable and Distributed Fertilizer Production.

Led by the fearless leader, Dr. Gerri Botte, CASFER: Center for Advancing Sustainable and Distributed Fertilizer Production in collaboration with CoPIs from Georgia Tech, Case Western Reserve University, FAMU, and MIT, has achieved remarkable milestones in just 2.5 years, well ahead of schedule.
NSF-funded ERCs are transformative grants that drive innovation and collaboration in key areas of engineering research. These centers are at the forefront of advancing sustainable agriculture, tackling complex challenges, and generating impactful solutions.
CASFER’s progress exemplifies the transformative potential of these grants, showcasing how strategic partnerships and cutting-edge research can lead to meaningful change.
It was inspiring to witness firsthand the dedication and innovation of the CASFER team including the students from the partner institutions. Their work is not only advancing the field of sustainable agriculture but also setting a high standard for ERCs nationwide.
Congratulations to Gerri and her team on their achievements, and I look forward to seeing the continued impact of CASFER and other ERCs in the years to come!!
