MNA At Montgomery College

On Friday and Saturday, I had the incredible opportunity to step into the vibrant campuses of Montgomery College for a site visit tied to the USDOL-funded Strengthening Community College Training (SCCT Round 2) grant. Amidst the bustling campus life, one shining beacon stood out: the Career Navigator. This individual is the guiding star, steering students through the complexities of their educational journey.

Career Navigators are more than advisors; they’re champions of student success. With personalized support and expert guidance, they help students chart their course, access resources, and explore promising career pathways. In fields like cybersecurity, data analytics, and IT, where skilled professionals are in high demand, Career Navigators play a crucial role in shaping the workforce of tomorrow.

Participants in the TechMAP Program shared their deep appreciation for their career navigator interactions, highlighting his helpfulness, supportiveness, and knowledge. From resume preparation to mock interviews, the navigator provides invaluable assistance. Some participants expressed a desire for more active guidance on securing internships and more personalized 1-on-1 time.

The research around student persistence and retention underscores the importance of counseling and advising, especially in community colleges. These institutions cater to a diverse student population, often balancing work, family, and school responsibilities. Counseling and advising not only facilitate student engagement but also convey a sense of care and support from the college community.

For Technology Metroarea Pathways (TechMAP), both ad hoc or prescriptive advising or intentional advising are being employed. The latter, involving proactive interactions with students, has shown to increase student retention and academic achievement in community colleges. It’s about more than just academic guidance; it’s about actively supporting students in their journey towards success.

Kudos to the exemplary Project Team Leadership and the Career Navigator for their unwavering commitment to student success!
