🌟 Celebrating the Conclusion of the Rec-to-Tech U Project: Empowering Urban Youth through Maker-Based Technology and Computer Science Learning in Urban Communities🌟

As we reflect on the journey of the National Science Foundation (NSF)-funded Rec-to-Tech U project, it is with a sense of both pride and bittersweet emotion that we share the accomplishments and impact of this great initiative.

Led by the Digital Harbor Foundation (DHF) and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), under the Advancing Informal STEM Learning (AISL) grant, the project has made significant strides in increasing access to equitable, culturally responsive maker-based technology and computer science programs for underserved youth.

Despite the challenges posed by COVID-19, which led to adjustments in the project’s timeline, the team adapted and persevered culminating in these outcomes:

🚀 Program Expansion and Youth Engagement
Pittsburgh: the programming expanded to 8 rec centers, engaging 455 youth with the support of 26 educators.
Baltimore: DHF’s Tech Lab facilitated the program at 12 rec centers, involving 10 Tech Lab coaches and successfully engaging 393 youth.

🔧 Development of the Rec-To-Tech Localization Toolkit: DHF made strides in designing the online Localization Toolkit, collaborating with community stakeholders to refine its content and functionality.

📊 Research and Evaluation: The UMBC research team conducted site observations, interviews, and data analysis, resulting in publications, posters, presentations, and talks. MNA played a vital role in assessing project progress, attending monthly meetings, reviewing resources, and providing insights.

🏆 Innovative Delivery Models: The localization efforts led to the creation of three distinct program delivery models, allowing rec centers to adapt based on educator and youth enthusiasm and organizational capacity:

Pittsburgh: Continued the 14-week maker foundation format, complemented by a 3-month online professional development training for educators.
Baltimore: Introduced a tech lending library and adopted a vendor model for Rec-to-Tech programming, revealing both opportunities and challenges in delivering equity-based STEM education.

💡 Transforming Rec Centers into Maker Spaces: The project demonstrated the potential of rec centers to serve as vibrant maker spaces. By integrating maker-based technology and CS programs, rec centers can:

A. Encourage youth to engage in hands-on, project-based learning, fostering creativity and problem-solving skills.
B. Provide underserved communities with access to cutting-edge technology and resources, bridging the digital divide.
C. Create inclusive, culturally responsive environments where youth feel valued and supported, strengthening community ties.
D. Equip youth with essential STEM skills and knowledge, preparing them for future educational and career opportunities.

We are hopeful for further expansion and collaboration to broaden the reach of Rec-to-Tech that will transform lives and communities.
