Groundbreaking NSF-funded initiative to boost climate resilience in Midwest agriculture! πΎπ‘οΈπ¬
We are excited to share details about the innovative DARE (Data-Advanced Research and Education) project, a collaboration between the University of Iowa, University of Arkansas, Kansas State University, and University of Nebraska-Lincoln. This National Science Foundation (NSF) funded initiative, supported by the EPSCoR Research Infrastructure Improvement program, aims to revolutionize our approach to climate change adaptation in agricultural communities across Kansas, Arkansas, Nebraska, and Iowa (a.k.a KANI states).
Key highlights:
β’ $4 million NSF grant to develop a comprehensive climate resilience infrastructure
β’ Creating a citizen science network with smart, low-cost sensors for real-time weather and soil data collection
β’ Engaging K-12 students, college students, and local communities through summer camps, field campaigns, and extension offices
β’ Applying machine learning to enhance heat index mapping, weather forecasting, and S2S climate outlook
β’ Focusing on environmental justice and improving water use efficiency in farming and green spaces
β’ Developing a skilled workforce with expertise in modern technologies like sensor design, UAV surveillance, and big data analysis
This project not only advances academic research but also empowers local communities, particularly in socioeconomically disadvantaged areas. It’s a significant step towards building climate resilience from the ground up, bridging the gap between cutting-edge research and practical application in agriculture-based economies.
The DARE project exemplifies how collaborative efforts between universities, local communities, and federal funding can drive innovation in climate adaptation strategies. It’s set to create a self-sustaining, grassroots infrastructure that will benefit higher education, research, and community development for years to come.
